Downtown is getting a new sustainable butcher shop as Darke Pines prepares to open in the space formerly occupied by The Citizen.
Husband-and-wife team Will and Erica Messmer will offer locally-sourced and sustainably-raised meat at their shop, which makes Darke Pines the only downtown butcher to focus specifically on grass-fed, hormone-free meat.
The duo have partnered with local producers and farmers who raise their animals humanely with no antibiotics or animal by-products. (Examples they list are Kinderhook Farm in Ghent, NY; Stryker Farm in Saylorsburg, PA; and Double Brook Farm in Hopewell, NJ).
Darke Pines launched a successful Kickstarter campaign last fall to raise funds for its new shop. The campaign raised $25,581, which was just a little over its $25,000 goal.
Darke Pines could open as early as this week.
